Gertrude May Barnstead \nElmira, NY \n\nPassed away on Friday, August 4, 2023 at the age of 95. Gertrude was born September 8, 1927 in Elmira, NY, the daughter of the late Wilbur and Lorena Yohey. \n\nShe was pre-deceased by her husband, Calvin R. Barnstead Sr. in 2012 and her brother-in-law, Wilfred Barnstead in 1986. \n\nGertrude is survived by her children, Sharon Barnstead Shaw (Mike Bilyk), Calvin (Brenda) Barnstead, John (Debby) Barnstead, and Tammy (Mike) Wilcox; grandchildren, Lorrie (Kevin) Sullivan, Michelle (Mike) Wheeler, Kelly (Steve) Davidson, Keith (Kirsten) Barnstead, Patrick Wilcox (Madison Nichols); great grandchildren, Daniel, Kaitlin, Devin, Teagan, Chase, Grace, Olivia and Bo; sister-in-law, Kathy Barnstead, her niece, Joanne (Teri) Fiori, her nephew, Todd (Lisa) Barnstead, and several extended family members. \n\nGertrude was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a dear friend. She was a dedicated homemaker and so loved her family. She enjoyed hosting and participating in family gatherings and events. She was a supporter of the Scouting Program and served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Boy Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader, was one of the first woman Cub Scout Masters in the nation, and recipient of the Scouting Silver Beaver Award. Gertrude worked on the Chemung County voting board, rising to the ranks of an election supervisor. She was a caring Day Care provider from her home for many years. She was an avid bowler, belonging to several leagues over the years. She was the record keeper and secretary for the Moore Business Form Retiree Club. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and served on many committees, as well as a Sunday School teacher and nursery worker. For many years she was a long time member of a local Home Bureau Club. She loved cooking, baking, and canning, crafting, making ceramics, and gardening. Gertrude always tried to remain positive, even through the hardest times. Her cheerful smile and pride in her family will be an everlasting memory.\n\nThe family will welcome relatives and friends to Sullivan’s Funeral Home, 365 E. Franklin St., at Rt. 13, Horseheads, NY on Thursday, August 10, 2023 from 6:30-8:30 PM. Her Funeral Service will take place on Friday, August 11, 2023 at Grace Episcopal Church, Elmira, NY at 10 AM. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband at Woodlawn Cemetery immediately following.
