It is with sadness that we announce the passing Karl M Balland (born Carl Ledwith) at the age of 86 in Big Flats, NY on June 26, 2023. Karl was born on January 7, 1937, in Springfield, MA, to Marvin and Barbara Balland, who have both passed away. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Karen Anderson and Janet Prada.\n\nGrowing up in Springfield, Karl had a passion for hockey and pursued it throughout his life. He received his Bachelor's degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his Master's from the University of Buffalo. He served his country honorably as a proud member of the US Army. After working with Corning Inc., he followed his love of sports by owning and operating his own sporting goods business. Karl also coached multiple youth sports teams which his sons played. In his later years, he enjoyed playing golf and participating in family tournaments with his children and grandchildren. Karl was an active member of the Big Flats community, serving on the town board and as town supervisor. He was also a longtime member of the Horseheads Elks Club and the Big Flats Legion, where he held various roles through the years\n\nKarl is survived by his former spouse, Mary Ann Balland, and their children: Dennis (Dawn) Balland of Orchard Park, NY, and their children Spencer and Autumn; Susan Balland (John Bravo) of Horseheads, NY; John (Lisa) Balland and their boys Zachary and Matthew; Thomas (Andi) Balland and their children Ryan, Catherine, and Megan; brother Edward Balland of Agawam, MA, as well as several nieces and nephews.\n\nA graveside memorial service in honor of Karl will be held at Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, NY, on Friday, July 7, 2023, at 11 AM.
