of Elmira, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Thursday evening, August 8, 2012 at the age of 96. Sam was born November 5, 1915 in Binghamton, NY a son of the late Edward and Concetta Sindoni Aloi. He was a son of an Italian family who came to American from Sicily to start a family. With a family of eight he remembers working with his father operating a fruit stand in Waverly "Banana curve" and to this day always smiled when he ate a banana. He spoke affectionately about his faithful horse companion "Chesty" who chauffeured him through town delivering fruit. Sam loved to go to big band dance competitions with his brothers. He met his future wife at the club, one dance is all it took for him to fall in love and marry his "hunny". Sam gave his wife roses weekly for every year that they were together. He has many memories of family tradition opening day at Catherine creek, hunting, poker games, bocce, Italian game a Morra' cooking his famous apple pie, eggplant and peppers. He enjoyed watching his "pet" deer and fawns in his backyard. He carefully cared for his Christmas cactus for over 50 yrs that he dedicated to his parents. Still to this day it blooms every Easter and Christmas. Sam retired after 42 years from the Elmira Water Board with many fond memories. One being the flood of 72' where he rescued 7 people off a roof by a row boat. He was a humble man who built his own home little by little as time and money permitted. Most important to him was his family that he cherished and his devotion to his Catholic faith. He was blessed with many close friends who visited him often. His famous last words "DO IT MY WAY" as we will always remember his way or no way.......... \nBesides his parents Sam is pre-deceased by wife of 58 years Fannie "Hun" Sedinger Aloi; sons, James Aloi, infant son Edward and Sam "Skip" Aloi; daughter-in-law Nancy Aloi; granddaughter, Kim Aloi; four brothers, Steven, Peter, Anthony and Francis; two sisters, Antoinette and Marie and step-sister, Violet. Sam is survived by grandchildren, Jay (Jen) Aloi of Gillet, PA, Denise (Tom) Argetsinger of Elmira, NY, Nicholas Aloi of Snowhill, MD; great grandchildren, Andrew, Hunter, Brooke, Clayton, Logan, Keegan; sister, Connie Sevendau; step-sister, Nicalina Musto; half-sisters, Stefana Blair and Veronica Bump; best friend, Stan Perkowski and neighbor, Joe and Wendy White and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will welcome relatives and friends to Sullivan's Funeral Home, 365 E. Franklin St, at Rt. 13, Horseheads, NY on Friday, August 10, 2012 from 6 PM to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Our Mother Church, 812 W. Broad St, Horseheads, NY on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 11AM with Rev. Christopher Linsler. Sammy will be laid to rest along side his wife, Fannie at Maple Grove Cemetery immediately following.
